The Impacts of Climate Change on Racialized Communities
We recognize the impacts of climate change on Canadians, particularly the racialized communities and their small businesses.
We have identified several environmental and social issues that disproportionately affect racialized and disadvantaged groups in Canada:

-
The impact of Climate Change on racialized communities. Racialized and low-income communities often live and work in areas more vulnerable to the effects of climate change like extreme weather events and have fewer resources to adapt.

-
Racialized communities lack requisite knowledge and awareness on Climate Change. There is a need to increase climate change education and awareness in racialized communities to build resilience.

-
Environmental injustice in the workplace. Many racialized individuals work in industries directly impacted by climate change, like agriculture, fishing, and tourism. These jobs are at higher risk of job loss or instability due to climate change.
-
The impacts on government funded Climate Change incentives on racialized communities. Current climate change incentive programs may not fully address the needs of disadvantaged groups. Programs should be reviewed to improve access and participation from these communities.

-
The pandemic has exacerbated negative effects of climate change. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted existing social and economic inequities in our society. These same vulnerabilities also increase the risks associated with climate change impacts like health issues, job insecurity, and poverty.
-
Recyclable materials found in landfills. More work is needed to improve waste management and increase recycling rates in racialized and low-income communities.

-
The challenges that diversity, inclusion, and equity present. Governments and organizations need to apply a diversity and inclusion lens when developing climate change policies, programs, and initiatives to ensure equal participation and benefits for all groups.

SB McGill Eco Energy & Environmental Inc. is poised to help address these environmental and social injustices. By working with government and community organizations, we can develop targeted solutions for racialized and disadvantaged communities to build resilience to climate change, increase access to resources and incentive programs, and work towards a more just and equitable society.
